The Philippine Embassy in Japan, alongside Sentro Rizal-Tokyo, the Philippine Department of Tourism-Tokyo, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), hosted “A Taste of the Philippines” on November 13, 2024, at the Hotel New Otani Tokyo. This event celebrated Filipino culture, showcasing its diverse culinary traditions and world-class destinations.
Guests enjoyed a rich array of traditional Filipino dishes curated by Chef Loida Ozaki, representing the culinary diversity of the Philippines’ three main island groups. The Luzon presentation featured popular dishes from Manila, Pampanga, Ilocos, and Laguna. The Visayas region was highlighted through specialties from Cebu, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental, known for their stunning beaches and vibrant food scenes. Mindanao’s offerings included dishes from Davao, Siargao, and the Bangsamoro region, emphasizing its growing significance in cultural tourism.
ASEAN-Japan Centre Secretary-General Kunihiko Hirabayashi remarked on the unique experience of tasting food from various islands. The evening also included performances by the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Cultural Dance Troupe and singer Maria Theresa Gow, who entertained guests with traditional songs.
Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene J. Garcia-Albano expressed gratitude for the strong ties between the Philippines and Japan and emphasized the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening diplomatic relations. She noted that events like this help build deeper connections between the two nations.
