Italian President Sergio Mattarella, accompanied by his daughter Laura, was warmly received by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The closed-door meeting, held in accordance with imperial protocol, was followed by a luncheon attended by Crown Prince Fumihito Akishino, Princess Kiko, and high-ranking officials. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Edmondo Cirielli, diplomatic advisor Fabio Cassese, and ambassadors from both countries, Gianluigi Benedetti and Satoshi Suzuki, were also present.
Later, President Mattarella visited the National Diet Building, where he met with House of Councilors President Masakazu Sekiguchi. The meeting highlighted the strong parliamentary ties between Japan and Italy, with Mattarella emphasizing their shared democratic values and ancient cultural heritage. He also underscored the strategic partnership agreement signed in January 2023, which has strengthened collaboration in various sectors and international forums like the G7 and G20.
President Sekiguchi praised Mattarella’s visit as “very significant” and expressed hope for further deepening bilateral relations, especially as the two nations prepare to celebrate the 160th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year.
Mattarella’s visit underscores the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between Japan and Italy, with further engagements planned in Kyoto and Hiroshima.
