In mid-February, the French Navy deployed its logistic supply ship Jacques Chevallier and a multi-mission destroyer to monitor and surveil illicit maritime activities, including prohibited ship-to-ship transfers involving North Korean-flagged vessels, in waters surrounding Japan. This marks the seventh such operation by the French Navy since 2019, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions (UNSCRs).
Japan has welcomed these efforts, emphasizing their importance in ensuring the effective implementation of UNSCRs and advancing international solidarity toward the complete, verifiable, and irreversible dismantlement of North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.
Japan continues to conduct its own surveillance activities and collaborates closely with France and other international partners to uphold maritime security and enforce UN sanctions. These joint efforts underscore the commitment of both nations to maintaining regional and global stability.
