Irish Minister Naughton and Ambassador Cole marked St. Patrick’s Day weekend in Japan with a series of events, including the Green Ireland Festival 2025 at Yoyogi Park and the Yokohama Motomachi Parade. Despite rainy weather canceling the Tokyo parade, the festival showcased Irish culture, food, and sustainable initiatives, strengthening ties between Ireland and Japan.
On March 16, Minister Naughton and Ambassador Cole attended the opening ceremony of the Green Ireland Festival 2025 at Yoyogi Park Event Square in Tokyo. The event showcased booths promoting Irish host towns, brands, music, and sustainable initiatives, as well as recovery support efforts. Minister Naughton visited stalls featuring Irish food and products and met with actor Tommy Bastow, who will portray Lafcadio Hearn in an upcoming NHK series.
Despite rainy weather, the festival proceeded, with the “Team Ireland” booth (C-11) distributing brochures, postcards, and stickers until 4 PM. However, the Tokyo St. Patrick’s Day Parade, organized by Irish Network Japan, was canceled due to inclement weather. Attendees were directed to the organization’s official website and social media for updates.
The previous day, March 15, Minister Naughton and Ambassador Cole met with members of the Japan Barrier Free Project and participated in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Yokohama Motomachi, engaging with the Irish community and friends of Ireland.
The events highlight the growing cultural and diplomatic ties between Ireland and Japan.
