Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya met today with Lorin S. Robert, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional issues. The meeting highlighted the strong “kizuna” (bond of trust) between the two nations, built over 150 years, and their shared commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP).
Key topics included Japan’s transparent handling of the ALPS-treated water discharge from Fukushima, which Secretary Robert acknowledged, stating he would share his firsthand experience with other Pacific Island countries. Minister Iwaya also reiterated Japan’s support for addressing climate change and marine environment challenges, including contributions to the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF).
During the visit, Japan and the FSM signed an agreement for a 3.8 billion yen project to construct a Cable Landing Station in Chuuk State, enhancing the FSM’s digital connectivity. This project, part of a broader U.S.-Japan initiative to improve subsea cable networks in the Pacific, aligns with commitments made at the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10) in 2024.
The meeting underscored Japan’s dedication to supporting the FSM’s sustainable development and stability through infrastructure projects like the new wharf at Pohnpei Port and the provision of a fishery research vessel.
