Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi met today with Paul Mashatile, Deputy President of South Africa, during his visit to Japan. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in energy transition, economic partnerships, and global challenges.
Prime Minister Ishiba emphasized Japan’s commitment to supporting South Africa’s G20 presidency and the success of TICAD 9, to be hosted in Yokohama this August. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi highlighted Japan’s interest in a realistic energy transition and requested South Africa’s support for Japanese businesses operating in the country.
Additionally, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Arfiya Eri attended a symposium co-hosted by the United Nations University and the Embassy of South Africa. She expressed Japan’s support for South Africa’s G20 priorities—solidarity, equality, and sustainability—and announced plans to address global challenges at TICAD 9.
The meetings and symposium underscored the strong partnership between Japan and South Africa, built on 115 years of diplomatic relations, and their shared commitment to tackling global issues.
