Ambassador ‘Akau’ola of Tonga welcomed yesterday former Japanese Ambassador Yoshifumi Okamura to the Tongan Embassy in Tokyo. Both diplomats previously served as Deputy Permanent Representatives to the United Nations in New York. Okamura, now Vice President of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, discussed opportunities to attract more Tongan students to APU, known for its diverse international student body and English-based curriculum.
The meeting highlighted APU’s unique learning environment, with nearly half of its students coming from abroad. Both sides agreed to continue exploring ways to strengthen educational ties between Tonga and Japan.
